Science and Technology at Eisteddfod 2025

The first week of August 2025 saw the bustling town of Wrexham host the National Eisteddfod of Wales, a vibrant celebration of Welsh culture, language, and the arts. But beyond the traditional competitions and performances, the Eisteddfod also features a dedicated Science and Technology Village (Y Pentref Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoleg), showcasing cutting-edge advancements and fostering discussions on the future of Wales.

Tom at Eisteddfod

This year, Trust Worthy AI's own Director, Tomos Williams, was deeply involved in several key sessions, highlighting the critical role of AI in shaping our future.

AI and Welsh Language

Tom's week began with a pivotal session he chaired, focusing on the development and use of AI in creating Welsh language content. He was joined by Dewi Bryn Jones of Canolfan Bedwyr and Gwen Sion of the Arts Council of Wales. This discussion was particularly significant as Dewi Bryn Jones was awarded the prestigious Eisteddfod Science Medal this year for his pioneering work in developing AI tools specifically for the Welsh language. The session explored the opportunities and challenges of leveraging AI to enrich and expand Welsh language resources, ensuring its vitality in the digital age.

Digital Health in Wales

Later in the week, Tom took on the role of a panelist in a dynamic discussion titled "Visions for the Future: Digital Innovation in Health and Care in Wales." Organised by Digital Health Care Wales(DHCW) and held within the Science and Technology Village, this session sparked serious conversations about how digital innovation is transforming health and care across Wales. The esteemed panel, chaired by Marian Wyn Jones (Independent Member, DHCW), included Ifan Evans (Director of Strategy, DHCW), Rhodri Griffiths (Innovation Adoption Director, LSHWales), and Elin Haf Davies (Chief Scientific Officer / Founder at Aparito). The forum provided an open and engaging platform to explore the current uses of digital technology in NHS Wales, its potential future value, and crucially, how to ensure public understanding, trust, and involvement in shaping these developments.

AI in Welsh Media

Finally, Tom participated in a thought-provoking session on AI and TV, delving into the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in the digital creative sector, particularly within film and television. Alongside Tom were Deian Gerallt (freelance sound engineer), Rhodri James (Gorilla's Director of Technology and Operations), and Adrian Morgan Jones (Senior Producer at Orchard Media Group). The discussion spotlighted the latest technological advancements and their potential in both pre-production and post-production of media content, from scriptwriting and visual effects to sound design and editing, demonstrating how AI is revolutionizing the creative landscape.

Tom's Summary

Tom's active participation throughout the National Eisteddfod underscored Trust Worthy AI's commitment to engaging with and contributing to discussions around the ethical and beneficial application of artificial intelligence across various sectors in Wales. The Eisteddfod provided an excellent platform to share insights, collaborate with leading experts, and inspire future innovations.
